  • Founded initially by Paul Watson in 1977 under the name Earth Force Society.

  • Sea Shepherd currently operates the vessels MV Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker.
SSCS Politics & Media:
  • Particularly known for using direct action tactics.
  • Often linked to the radical environmentalism movement.
  • Uses the media extensively for public relations.
  • Animal Planet has publicised the work of the SSCS when in 2008 it began filming the weekly series Whale Wars.
  • Whale Wars is based on the SSCS's encounters with the Southern Ocean based Japanese whaling fleet.
